NASDAQ, S&P 500, and DJI: History of Losses

NASDAQ and S&P 500 had the worst weekly loss last week (21 Jan 2022) with loss more than %5 in just a four day week. The big question on the street is will the market arrest its slide or will it continue losing further?

Here is quick look at the number of weekly losses that are worse than -5% in three US stock market indices NASDAQ, S&P 500, and Dow Jones Index since 1990. We can clearly see NASDAQ having more number of losses worse than 5% when compared S&P 500 and DJI.

We can also see that some of the worse years have been around dot com bust in early 2000, recession in 2008, and the 2020 COVID pandemic beginning.

Note the big caveat of this chart is that we are only looking the number of losses instead of how bad the losses were. F
